I'm Here.

Right now: Brooklyn, New York
Not long ago: Austin, Texas
This one time: Richmond, Virginia
Once upon a time: Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Grant me the serendipity to change
the things I cannot accept.

this will be the death of me! I’m in a throw everything out, and start over phase.

I’m inclined to post a bunch of unsolicited advice on organizing, except the truth is that historically, I’m not good at being organized in the physical world, and that has become a huge motivator for the following cheats:

  • Move so many times that you get used to starting with nothing.
  • If something doesn’t have a purpose, don’t make a place for it. You’ll just be inclined to bring home more purposeless somethings to keep that first thing company.
  • Make a conscious decision to have no drawers* outside of the kitchen**.
  • Make a conscious decision to aim to make less than a plastic grocery bag’s worth of non-recyclable garbage each week.
  • Paper shredder.

*This makes it easy to identify what needs to go / what can’t come home with me.
**My special childhood talent was pulling a drawer open half an inch, shoving something into it, and forgetting about it and all its friends for months. Plus, hanging clothes is way easier than folding. Requires less ironing, too.
