Did a little project last night. I had seen these chairs at Anthropologie that had canvases from paintings pasted on them. I thought they looked awesome, but they were a ridiculous price, $780. It seamed easy enough to do so I took it as inspiration and went looking for a chair. I figured I’d be able to find one at Class and Trash. After a few visits there, I had not found a chair suitable for the project. So I decided to try it on a metal cart I saw there. I found three paintings on canvas there as well and decided to take a swing at it. Then I went to the craft store and picked up a rotary cutter and mat and some 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. Total for the cart, the three paintings, the adhesive, and the rotary cutter and mat was $105.

First I cut the canvases of the stretcher frames. Next I made a stencil of the shelf’s surface out of craft paper. Then I laid the stencil over the first canvas, used masking tape hold it in place and used the rotary cutter to cut the shape out of the canvas. I repeated this for the other two canvases. Then I laid each canvas on a shelf and used the rotary trimmer again to do any touch up trimming that was needed. I put the canvases to the side and masked off the edges of the shelves to prevent overspray of the adhesive getting on the parts of the shelves that weren’t getting covered with the canvases. For the last step I took the parts outside to spray with the adhesive. I sprayed both the shelves and the backs of the canvases. The adhesive becomes super tacky in about 30 seconds and remains so for up to 30 minutes, so I peeled the masking tape off before applying the canvases to pass some time. I then applied the canvases one by one to the shelves, making sure they were smooth and flat. I then reassembled it. I plan to put some kind of clear coat to protect the paintings from wear and tear as it will be used as a storage unit in a half bath.

Notes:

I hadn’t used 3M Super 77 spray adhesive before but I think it was a good choice for this application, but would look into some other adhesives for future projects. Perhaps something that penetrates the canvas, but won’t discolor them.

My brother is so crafty.
