Let's talk about time travel.
And how my Thursday night self will want so badly to high-five my last week self for cleaning and organizing everything in my home, and putting fresh sheets on the bed before flying out of town. I often wonder what percentage of my “missing” a place comes from simply missing my bed.

Emotional hangover.
When I left Florida for Texas, I had zero time to say goodbye to anyone but family. After spending time with friends today who I hadn’t seen in years and / or didn’t have a chance to say goodbye to, I was quite lachrymose for my entire 45-mile drive back to my parents’ house, feeling like this visit has been one huge 8-month-delayed “goodbye.” Then this song came on...

My sleep schedule
is so ridiculous right now, but I justify it with thoughts like, “Whatever, it’s only 4 a.m. in Austin.”

Mom's Christmas Newsletter, and more.
She usually tries to keep my brothers and me from seeing it, because, as she says, we tend to “pick it apart and read into it too much.” Fair enough. Regardless, Justin and I found it: This has been a busy year. Justin came down [to Florida] at the end of January to bring Marisa her belongings from Richmond, as she had settled into her own place in Fort Lauderdale. But that...

Generation Gap dot com.
Christmas dinner afterthought: I love how “our” generation will say things like, “the-bomb-dot-com…” or “your-face-dot-com” and it means one [stupid and sarcastic] thing, and we get it… and yet similarly, two generations above can completely give away the shallow depths to which their Internet knowledge delves: “Oh, look at that crazy hat!...

Me: Sweet, I've heard a lot about this cookbook!
Justin: Yeah I figured you should cook more...
Me: I do cook! But I live alone, so it's sort of hard not to feel wasteful about it.
Grandma: You just need an animal. Just feed it ALL the leftovers...
Me: I can't imagine what kind of anim--

Me: Whoah, mom! When did you start talking with your mouth full?! After everything you taught me...!

Third Time
whenparentstext: Dad: tonight was the third time of my life that I did not immediately recognize you. Dad. It’s always weird hearing this from parents or their friends when you arrive home. My dad tends to say something along the lines of, “it’s weird… you didn’t turn out to look anything like what we thought you’d look like, based on what you looked like when...

Best news.
The brother who lives in Richmond texted me, “If I come in January, can I bring Josh and Ken, too?” This essentially translates to, “If I come in January, can I bring your hairstylist and your photographer?” YES. DUH. In early 2006, Josh flew down to Florida to drive with me on my move to Richmond. I had met him on visits to Richmond, and we worked in the same salon when...
